INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF
THIRTEEN INDIGENOUS GRANDMOTHERS
WHEREAS, On October 11, 2004, 13 indigenous grandmothers from all
over the world—the Arctic Circle, North, South, and Central America,
Africa, and Asia—arrived at Tibet House’s Menla Mountain Retreat in upstate
New York and agreed to form a global alliance, joining together to pass
down the traditions which teach the younger generations to save the earth,
pray, and strive for unity and world peace; and
WHEREAS, The grandmothers are women of prayer and women of action
with a solidarity which creates a network to rebalance and educate the
world concerning the fundamental laws of nature and original teachings
based on a respect for all life, and include Aama
Bombo (Tamang/Nepal),
Margaret Behan (Cheyenne-Arapaho), Rita Pitka Blumenstein (Yupik), Julieta
Casimiro (Mazatec),
Marie Alice Campos Freire (Brazil), Flordemayo (Mayan), Tsering Dolma Gyaltong (Tibetan),
Beatrice Long Visitor Holy Dance (Oglala Lakota),
Rita Long Visitor Holy Dance (Oglala Lakota),
Agnes Baker Pilgrim (Takelma Siletz),
Mona Polacca (Hopi/Havasupai/Tewa),
Bernadette Rebienot (Omyene),
and Clara Shinobu Iura
(Brazil); and
WHEREAS, The International Council of Thirteen Indigenous
Grandmothers plans to gather every six months, traveling the world to
cultivate their unified prayer; and
WHEREAS, The International Council of Thirteen Indigenous
Grandmothers has requested to come under the umbrella of the Center for
Sacred Studies, a California nonprofit dedicated to sustaining indigenous
ways of life through cross-cultural spiritual practices, ministry, and
education, and a commitment to peace and unity for all peoples; and
WHEREAS, Volunteering their time and expertise as indigenous
rights lawyers, translators, organizers, and fundraisers, the staff at the
Center for Sacred Studies assists the International Council of Thirteen
Indigenous Grandmothers in fulfilling their vision; and
WHEREAS, The International Council of Thirteen Indigenous
Grandmothers looks back with pride and forward with hope, recognizing its
many accomplishments yet knowing how much more necessary work remains to be
done as they educate and nurture the next generation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY SENATOR DENISE MORENO DUCHENY, That she honors the work of
the International Council of Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers, commends the
grandmothers on the vial role they have played in improving the quality of
life worldwide, and extends best wishes for continued success in the
future.
